Beam & Block

by Liz & Matt Coates May.14.2006 4:06:52 pm

On Friday, as well as finishing off the rest of the foundations, the concrete beams supporting the living room floor were placed and cemented in.  The gaps between these are then filled with breeze blocks to form the ‘beam & block’ floor.  There was a particular reason for doing the living room floor this way when the rest of the kitchen will have a traditional concrete floor.  However, although this made sense when it was originally explained to me, I have since forgotten what it was.

Also this week the mains water pipe has been replaced with a temporary (grey plastic) pipe and a small section of a damaged soil pipe (the word ‘soil’ here is a euphemism - figure it out) was replaced where it passes under the new foundations.  New (blue plastic) water pipes have been placed ready to take the mains supply and the feed from the underground rainwater storage tank, while a (black plastic) duct has been put in place around the outside of the foundations to route the mains electricity supply to the new meter location.

Next week they plan to get the floors finished and build the retaining wall at the back before the lawn starts to collapse.  We spent part of Saturday afternoon looking at paving slabs (sometimes it’s hard to put the excitement into words) so that we can have the patio laid before the mud completely takes over the house.

Thanks for reading and for all your comments.
