A week of highs and lows

Tut! Over a week and no blog.  Better start with what happened last week.

On Monday, a man arrived just as we were leaving for school, saying that he had come to put the seamless aluminium gutters up.  It was too dark to see much by the time I got home from work, but I did manage to discern that the down-pipes were not aluminium as expected, but PVC.  Since the whole point of the exercise had been to avoid the use of PVC, this came as a bit of a ‘disappointment’.  For those of you who are unfamiliar with the term, ‘disappointment’ here means being thrown into a rage of anger and frustration.  If I had been in any condition to write a blog that night, the title would have been, ‘Aaaargh!’  It was especially annoying since I had specifically checked with the builder that the downpipes would be aluminium as well as the gutters when he got the quote for the work to be done.  It eventually turned out that he had wrongly assumed that the quote included aluminium downpipes, when in fact it had not.  Since it is completely futile to remove them now that they are up, we’ve not much choice but to live with them.

On Tuesday, EDF turned up, as promised, to install the new electricity meter.  This seemed to go smoothly and cleared the way for the final knock-through, between the new living room and the old ‘study’, which happened on Friday.  For those of you are unfamiliar with the term, a ‘study’ is a room for shoving stuff you can’t think of anywhere else to shove.  All of this stuff is now occupying most of the remaining floor space in the living room (the one in which we are still attempting to live) building up its hopes of finding a new home before Christmas.

We had a busy weekend decorating the kitchen and today (Monday again), the builders arrived bright and early and got on with making the hole in the wall into a doorway and plasterboarding the last bit of wall in the living room.  Later, the lovely new slate tiles arrived and they made a start on tiling the kitchen floor.  So far we have a patch covering about a quarter of the floor.  Hopefully most of the rest will be done tomorrow.
