Well, believe it or not, we are just about to hit the anniversary of the start of the project.  We may have been naive in expecting to be finished by now and we have to take some responsibility for some of the delays but it’s been a very full year and we’ve still plenty more to do.  The builders, on the other hand, are almost done and should be able to send us their final bill very soon.

More work outside this week.  We had decided a (long) while ago to use sleepers to make the retaining wall down the side of the building.  When we finally got to this point, we some difficulty finding decent sleepers for a reasonable price.  The builders eventually tracked down a local source of re-used hardwood railway sleepers, which look fantastic and should last forever.  As well as this, they have built a raised bed at the front, surrounded by cut pieces of sleeper.  This covers the rainwater tank to stop anyone parking on it and make the access cover less obtrusive.



We’re really pleased with the way this has turned out and we even have a layby for our three wheelie-bins, just inside the back gate.

Oh, and on Friday they re-layed the part of the concrete driveway that got broken up to dig the foundations all those months ago, and gravelled the rest.  For the first time in a year, the place doesn’t look like a building site (as long as you don’t look too closely at the junk cluttering up the front lawn).

The main things now remaining are the fence at the front, which should happen on Monday, and the patio slabs for the side and rear that won’t be arriving until later this week.
