And you thought you’d heard the last from us…

A week or two after the last update, the builders returned and finished laying the patio and put up the front fence.  They have since been back once to finish off some odds and ends like the rest of the loft insulation and the last two kitchen floor tiles where the mains water pipe used to emerge.  They still have a bit of grouting and some exterior woodwork to do but one more day should get that done.  It’s so nice just to be where we are that we haven’t been chasing them up.

Over the summer we’ve beening getting on with various bits of decorating and gardening. I laid Debbie’s bedroom floor, while Liz and Sarah planted up the new bed at the front with lots of native wild flowers - this already looks spectacular and has instantly become an attraction for butterflies.  The front lawn still hasn’t quite recovered from the trauma of being a builder’s yard but, nw that we’ve finally got around to mowing it, it doesn’t look too bad.

Latest news is that, since last Wednesday, we now have carpets in the new living room, the play room and the cloakroom (this is not a euphemism for ‘toilet’ but is actually the room that used to be the ‘study’ but is now a place to hang coats and a sunny spot to sit on an ex-Sawtry-Methodist-Church pew while making phone calls).  This is a huge step forward and, once I get around to putting up curtain rails in the bay window and connecting up the TV aerial, we can finally move into the new living room for good.  The only down-side is that I’ve now lost my workshop, since I’m not allowed to use the workmate in the living room any more.

We actually ordered the carpets a few weeks ago but didn’t arrange the date for them to be fitted until we were sure we were going to finish the decorating.  Two of the three rooms were, thanks to Liz’s parents, already painted - apart from some details like staining the doors and some odd bits of woodwork (thanks James).  The old study needed the most work, since it required the wallpaper to be stripped and a lot of holes and cracks filling before repainting everything.

Debbie’s new bedroom furniture also arrived last week and she moved into her room on Sunday night - another major step since she and Sarah have never had their own rooms before.  We’ve only built the bed so far but hopefully the rest will get done this week.

Even more significantly, we actually had a meeting with a potential new plumber a couple of weeks ago.  Like all of his profession, he’s booked up for the next couple of months but he seems quite sympathetic towards our eccentricities and there’s a possibility that we might even have the rest of the central heating system installed before the year’s out.
